ChatGPT ads in Europe, Meta AI on Mac, free coding — three tools this week
Three announcements in one day show that AI is no longer an experiment — it is becoming a daily tool for the small business owner.
Summary
- Meta AI is now on Mac — free desktop assistant with screen sharing, dictation and Google Workspace integration
- Replit Free Mode with GPT-5.6 Luna — custom tools no longer require a developer or per-token costs
- ChatGPT ads roll out to 31 European countries on August 24 — customers will start seeing ads in AI answers; a new channel for advertisers too
Bottom line: In one day, three announcements show AI moving out of the experiment corner and into everyday office infrastructure — your desktop, your code, your advertising channel.
1. Meta AI comes to Mac — a free desktop assistant
What changed. Meta released a dedicated Mac app for its AI assistant (MacRumors). The app is 16 MB, requires macOS 15+ and Apple Silicon. Built-in screen sharing (you can show a window and ask for advice about what’s on screen), system-wide dictation and a connection to Google Workspace documents.
What this means for a small business. If you work on a Mac and until now only opened ChatGPT in a browser tab, you now have a free assistant that can see your screen (an Excel sheet, a PDF contract, a customer reply) and help immediately. If you run a 5-person workshop and write to customers, system-wide dictation means you can speak an invoice or a reply email instead of typing it.
What you can do this week.
- Download the Meta AI Mac app from meta.ai — free, ~5 min to install
- Try dictation: open your customer reply email and speak it out loud — compare how fast you work versus typing
- Share your screen with a specific work file (e.g. a purchasing sheet) and ask “how do I make this clearer”
What to watch.
- A Windows version (Meta usually follows 2-4 months later)
- If Meta’s desktop app gains traction, ChatGPT and Anthropic will accelerate their equivalents
2. Replit Free Mode — a small owner builds a tool without a developer
What changed. Replit launched Free Mode, powered by OpenAI’s new cost-efficient model GPT-5.6 Luna (OpenAI, Crypto Briefing). Turning an idea into working software no longer requires paying for tokens. If a task needs deeper reasoning, Replit temporarily routes to the more capable GPT-5.6 Sol model and then returns to Luna, preserving project context.
What this means for a small business. If you run an accounting office or a craft workshop and until now thought that a custom tool (a client description generator, an internal booking table, a simple pricing page) cost €500-2000 to outsource, you can now do it yourself by describing what you need in plain English or Latvian. The result won’t be industrial software, but it’s good enough for internal use or a single client.
What you can do this week.
- Sign up for a replit.com Free Mode account (free), choose “Build with AI” and describe something concrete: “I need a page where the client enters their surname and receives a PDF confirmation of their appointment”
- If the result works, save it and share the link with the client — no additional cost
- Compare the result with what you used to pay for outsourcing
What to watch.
- Anthropic (Claude) and Google will follow with their own low-cost models in similar free tiers
- Vercel, Netlify and other competitors will launch similar tools in 2-3 months
3. ChatGPT ads come to Europe on August 24
What changed. OpenAI announced that on August 24, ChatGPT will start showing ads in 31 European countries — including Germany, France, Spain, Italy and other European Economic Area countries (OpenAI, TrendingTopics). Only Free and Go plan users will see ads; Plus, Pro and Enterprise subscriptions remain ad-free. In Europe, ads will not initially be personalized — targeting will be based on what the customer is discussing. A self-service Ads Manager tool is coming later this summer; for now, ads must be arranged through OpenAI’s sales team or partners.
What this means for a small business. Two things happen at once. First, your customers asking ChatGPT “best hairdresser near me” or “how do I fix a leaking tap” will start seeing ads in the answers — a new channel where your business either appears, or gets buried behind a competitor’s ad. Second, when the Ads Manager opens (weeks to months from now), you’ll be able to advertise there yourself — similar to Google Ads, but in an AI conversation context.
What you can do this week.
- Open ChatGPT free version and ask a real customer question about your industry (“best X service in [city]”) — find out how ChatGPT describes your field today
- Sign up for the OpenAI Ads Manager waitlist (openai.com/ads) — when self-service opens, be first in
- Make sure your website has proper structured data (schema.org, Open Graph tags) — ChatGPT reads these when composing an answer
What to watch.
- Ads Manager (self-service tool) later this year
- Anthropic and Perplexity will follow with their own ad formats in 3-6 months
Today’s picture
Three announcements in one day reveal one structural shift: AI is moving from being a separate “add-on” (open a ChatGPT tab, request one thing) to becoming everyday office infrastructure — the desktop assistant, the place where you write your own code, and the channel through which customers find you. For a small business, that means three simultaneous opportunities: work faster, build your own tools, and think about the new place where customers look for answers.
| Event | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Meta AI Mac app (free) | Every Mac-using small business gains a free desktop assistant |
| Replit Free Mode with Luna | Custom tool costs for a small business drop from €500-2000 to €0 |
| ChatGPT ads in Europe Aug 24 | New advertising channel; customers start seeing ads in AI answers |
Three questions:
- When did you last ask ChatGPT about your industry, to see what a customer sees?
- What small repeating task in your day could you build yourself in Replit this week?
- If customers find you through AI answers instead of Google search, is your website ready?
